New Michigan RNG Project
DTE Vantage, a segment of DTE Energy, is converting biogas from a Riverview, Michigan, landfill into renewable natural gas (RNG). The project is the result of a collaboration between the city and Riverview Energy Systems ─ an entity jointly owned by DTE Vantage and a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources LLC. The project, dating back to the late 1980s, converts an existing landfill-gas-to-renewable-electricity project into a new facility that captures the biogas produced at the landfill and upgrades it to pipeline-quality natural gas. The RNG is then sent to a DTE Energy natural gas pipeline and attributed for use by transportation fuel customers.
DTE Vantage has experience identifying a landfill site’s unique strengths and determining whether the extracted biogas is well-suited for electric production or conversion to RNG for distribution and sale. “The greenhouse gas we capture and use at the Riverview Land Preserve landfill not only reduces carbon emissions in the area but also displaces higher-emissions transportation fuels for greater environmental benefit, all while generating additional income for the city,” said Kevin Dobson, vice president of biomass for DTE Vantage.
NextEra Energy Resources develops renewable fuels solutions and, with its affiliated partners, is the world’s largest generator of renewable energy from the wind and sun (and a major player in battery storage).
