BP and Iberdrola have awarded Imefy a contract to manufacture and supply the transformer for the largest renewable hydrogen production plant in Spain (25 MW), which will be located at the BP refinery in Castellón.

Imefy, headquartered in Los Yébenes, a municipality located in the province of Toledo, will manufacture, supply, and supervise the assembly and commissioning of the three-phase power transformer, with 37 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of power and a 66/30 kilovolts (kV) transformation ratio.

The transformer is expected to be supplied in the first quarter of 2026. The project is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026 with an investment of more than US$72 million. In later phases of the project, the green hydrogen produced could also be used in key industries that are difficult to decarbonize in the Valencian Community, such as ceramics, to replace the natural gas used in their processes, in chemical industries, and in heavy transport.

Largest Green Hydrogen Plant In Spain

The Castellón green hydrogen plant jointly promoted by Iberdrola España and BP will be the largest in Spain. Its 25 MW electrolyzer will be powered by renewable electricity through a power purchase agreement signed with Iberdrola España, which will supply 200GWh/year from Iberdrola España’s photovoltaic and projects.

Green hydrogen produced by water electrolysis fueled by renewable electricity will meet the European requirements for producing green hydrogen (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin, RFNBO) and support the transition of the BP refinery in Castellón to an integrated energy center.

It is expected that 2540 tons (2800 tonnes) a year of green hydrogen could replace part of the grey hydrogen currently used by the BP refinery in Castellón — currently produced from natural gas — and is expected to prevent the emission of 25,353 tons (23,000 tonnes) of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, equivalent to the emissions of 5000 cars in the same time period.

The plant has an equivalent funding of US$15.5 million from the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan’s Innovative Value Chain and Renewable Hydrogen Knowledge support programs, with funds to be allocated by the European Union’s NextGeneration EU.
