Centrica Expands Green Power Portfolio
Centrica Acquires Belgium Battery Storage Project
Centrica has acquired an 18 MW battery storage project in Belgium from venture capital firm LRM. Commissioned in April 2018, the Terhills battery park is located in Lanklaar/Dilsen-Stokkem, on the Dutch-Belgian border. In total, there are 140 large Tesla batteries which serve to store or release green energy and thus avoid the imbalances on the grid. For the last six years, Centrica has optimized the batteries to deliver flexibility services to the European transmission grid.
“We’ll continue to maximize the output of the batteries, helping to provide back-up to the renewables grid and encouraging the growth of solar and wind power in Belgium,” said Chris O’Shea, group chief executive officer at Centrica. “We know the Belgian market well, with our demand/response team in Antwerp. That’s why we’re investing in battery storage here with confidence. We will continue to maximize the output of the batteries in order to provide a back-up to the high-voltage grid and to encourage the growth of solar and wind energy in Belgium.”
