Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub Is A Go

US Department Of Energy To Award Up To US$1.2 Billion To Deliver Low Carbon Hydrogen To Texas And Gulf Coast Communities

The HyVelocity Hub – a multi-partner, multi-location initiative to build and expand low-carbon hydrogen production and infrastructure in Texas and the Gulf Coast – has executed a cooperative agreement with the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations to receive up to US$1.2 billion in federal funding.

The first phase of federal funding (US$22 million) will be dedicated to planning, development, and design activities around site selection, technology deployment, community benefits, and engagement, labor partnerships, and workforce training.

HyVelocity aims to become the country’s largest hydrogen hub and will leverage the Gulf Coast region’s high concentration of existing hydrogen production and end-use assets to develop low-carbon hydrogen that can power fuel cell vehicles, industrial processes, ammonia production, refining and petrochemical production, and marine shipping fuel.

Over its lifetime, HyVelocity is expected to create about 45,000 jobs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 7 MMTPA.

The HyVelocity Hub is a collaborative comprised of non-profit research organizations, academia, and energy companies working to advance the clean hydrogen ecosystem in Texas and the US Gulf Coast. With more than 1000 miles (1609 km) of dedicated hydrogen pipelines, and 48 hydrogen production plants, the Gulf Coast is already the nation’s largest hydrogen producer. It is home to a diverse array of energy resources, including hydrogen production facilities and pipelines, a large base of industrial energy consumers, and a skilled workforce.

HyVelocity, is an industry-led hub that includes six core industry participants: AES Corporation, Air Liquide, Chevron, ExxonMobil, MHI Hydrogen Infrastructure, and Ørsted. HyVelocity is administered by GTI Energy, and includes a wide array of organizations, including organizing participants, The University of Texas at Austin, the Center for Houston’s Future, and Houston Advanced Research Center.
