Germany Increases Its Green Hydrogen Capacity

Wunsiedel Energy Park Commissions Green Hydrogen Generation Plant

Wunsiedel Energy Park

Germany has commissioned one of its largest green hydrogen generation plants. Located in Wunsiedel, Upper Franconia, the plant can produce 1350 tons (1224 tonnes) of green hydrogen from renewable solar and wind power in the Wunsiedel Energy Park.

Hydrogen is generated by a Siemens 8.75-MW Silyzer 300 electrolyzer. The Silyzer 300 is based on proton exchange membrane technology. The hydrogen will be used primarily in the region’s industrial and commercial enterprises.

As general contractor, Siemens Smart Infrastructure was responsible for the construction of the hydrogen plant and the creation of an intelligently monitored and controlled power grid. The customer for green hydrogen is the regional business community — encompassing everything from the glass and ceramics industries to transport companies, automotive suppliers, and the neighboring sawmill. The hydrogen will be distributed by truck trailers on a decentralized basis to end customers in Northern Bavaria, Thuringia, Southern Saxony, and Western Bohemia.

The hydrogen generation plant will be linked to Siemens’ existing battery storage facility and with neighboring industrial enterprises which can use its waste heat or the oxygen split off during electrolysis.
