Burckhardt Compression will supply a hydrogen diaphragm compressor to Hungarian Gas Storage Ltd. for its Aquamarine project. The project includes a hydrogen plant in an underground gas storage facility owned by Hungarian Gas Storage Ltd. The produced hydrogen is mixed into natural gas and utilized in its own gas engines and furnaces. Among the goals of the project is to conduct an industrial-scale experiment for the long-term storage of hydrogen in underground gas storage at pressures above 1450 psi (100 bar) to reduce storage volume. The compressor will be used to compress the hydrogen from 435 to 4351 psi (30 to 300 bar).

The compressor is being manufactured at Burckhardt’s facility in Shenyang, China, and will be shipped as a skidded compression unit to GanzAir Compressortechnics LLC in Hungary. The compressor skid includes a lube oil system, motor, gas cooler, instrumentation and control system, and a closed cooling water loop with an air cooler.

As part of the Aquamarine project, Hungarian Gas Storage Ltd is intending to implement an electrolysis system with approximately 2.5 MW total performance and the corresponding hydrogen gas preparatory technology at the Kardoskut Underground Gas Storage site.
